Why I like the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card

Southwest is a great airline to fly with. In a world where baggage fees go up and amenities go down, Southwest has some standout features.
  1. Every passenger can check 2 bags for free. At this point I travel exclusively carry on (with away luggage), but I know free checked bags is a huge perk for most people.
  2. Southwest also gives you complimentary snacks and drinks during their inflight service which is becoming less common and many of the pilots have a great sense of humor.
  3. You can also change your flights without fees! If you find the same flight for cheaper later you can get a credit to your account for the price difference! 
  4. They run some really good sales with some competitive pricing meaning you can get a better flying experience often for much less than the competition.

Who is the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card sign up reward best for?

Anyone who wants to travel or need-great in the following:
  • Domestically
  • Caribbean (think Dominican Republic etc)
  • Mexico
  • Central America

How many Rapid Rewards Points does each flight cost?

Great question!

Southwest uses a system whereby the number of Rapid Rewards points needed for a given flight varies depending on the dollar cost of the flight. 

By comparison, other airlines have a flat rate. For instance, on United Airlines (at this time)  for a Saver Award one way from US to US destinations will be 12,000 United Airline miles. 

On the other hand, Southwest one way flights domestically can be as low as 2,662 Rapid Rewards Points (this is insanely low and the first time I have seen it this low! it's usually closer to 4-5k) one way but they can also be up to 34,000 points for the same route! 

So as you can see, if you use your points wisely (and if you can be flexible) you can get a lot of value out of the sign up bonus alone! You can also squander is in one flight. Don't do that..

What is the current sign up bonus for Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card?


​This is a really easy bonus to achieve as most people can easily put $1,000 worth of every day expenses on this card within 3 months. Groceries, Gas, etc.  (For example: $50/week x 12 weeks is already $600 and I know a lot of households spend more than that per week in groceries, let alone your gas costs)

Of course YMMV. This depends widely on your departure airport and destination, time of year and demand. You can do some testing on the southwest website to see if this is a good fit for you! Depending on where you live and where you want to need great you could possibly have roundtrip airfare for 2-3 people covered (just pay airport taxes and $5.60 9/11 fee) That is a huge deal and can help you on your way to an amazing experience!!

The Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver that comes with your Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Credit Card covers the cardholder and any additional drivers permitted by the rental agreement. This coverage provides reimbursement for damage due to collision or theft for most rental vehicles when traveling in the US and abroad. In the US, this coverage supplements your auto insurance coverage. Abroad, you do not have to claim payment from any other source of insurance before receiving coverage under this benefit. Initiate and complete the entire rental transaction using the Chase Sapphire card and decline the rental company's collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver. 

Coverage is up to the actual cash value of the rental car and valid on rental periods less than 31 consecutive days.

​​What Is The Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Credit Card Trip Cancellation Insurance / Trip Interruption Insurance?

The Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption Insurance that comes with your Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Credit Card covers the cardholder and immediate family members (even if the Cardholder is not traveling with them). If a covered loss prevents you from traveling on or before the departure date and you have to cancel your trip, you can be reimbursed under the Trip Cancellation Insurance. If a cover loss happens on the way to the point of departure or after departure caused your trip to be interrupted, or if you have to pay fees to change the date of your trip, this is covered under the Trip Interruption Insurance. This insurance covers travel arrangements paid for by your Chase Sapphire card or with your Chase Rewards points. (so even if your trip was "free" because you used points, you can still have this coverage!) Reimbursement is secondary to any other travel insurance you may carry. (But this can be used as your travel insurance, guys!)

Coverage is up to $10,000 per covered trip and a maximum limit of $20,000 per occurrence and a maximum benefit amount per 12-month period of $40,000.

Basically you can call 24/7 and a Chase Concierge will help you send emergency messages, find English-speaking doctors, dentists, and hospitals, find legal assistance, emergency transportation, lost luggage locating assistance, prescription assistance, and even pre-trip assistance to find out information like exchange rates, local currency, health precautions, ATM locations. This could be handy for someone who is not tech savvy to research online themselves.

Travel can be really rewarding and especially if it is for spiritual events or theocratic interests. Still, it is definitely an expense that not everyone is able to afford at first glance. Accommodation and transportation such as airfare are two of the largest expenses. Many times airfare is the most expensive part! 

How can credit cards help you spend less to travel?

Responsible and skillful use of credit cards involves always paying off your credit card in full each statement period. Credit cards can have extremely high interest rates, so if you do not pay them off each month you will lose the benefit of any perks the card offered. 

You may be aware that many credit cards offer sign up bonuses. To achieve these bonuses you must spend a certain dollar amount within a certain length of time. The bonuses may be cash bonuses or they may be rewards points that work for a certain hotel brand, airline, or they could even be a universal point that can be transferred to travel partners. 

If you sign up for one of these credit cards and make strategic purchases of things you would already be buying anyways, you may be surprised that you actually can afford to go to an international convention, a special convention, or do a need greater trip. After all, if you can get your airfare free that is a HUGE savings!

Chase Credit Cards for Free Travel

We have personally had excellent success making use of the Chase line of credit cards for special conventions and need greeting trips. In the past 3 years we have been able to use these points to fly from US to Asia twice, to Europe once, in addition to domestic flights within the US and all of these flights have been FREE! Now when I say free, please understand that you often will have to pay some sort of tax or airport fee on a flight when redeeming miles. It varies greatly between airports and countries. There is a mandatory $5.60 each way 9/11 Security Fee, for example. But still, in my mind paying only $5.60 for a flight to Europe rounds down to a FREE flight! What do you think?

What to know before you get started

A couple things you should know before you get started:
  • Anyone with Good to Excellent credit score (700 and up) have a solid chance of working these deals. Some have even been approved for these cards with a credit score of 645. 
  • You will need to have a plan, especially for the premium cards, to achieve the minimum spend in a way that does not put an unnecessary and illogical financial burden on you. 
  • You will need to be a little bit patient. Unless you can put the minimum spend on the card in one day, pay it off that month, and get the points the following statement period, please realize it will take a few months to collect your points and sign up bonus and to, in turn, be able to use those points for travel. 
  • Don't have a trip planned? You should still start now. Having a stockpile of points enables you to say yes when an unexpected theocratic opportunity presents itself! It's actually best to start when you don't have anything on the horizon. ;)

Chase Ink Business Preferred - 3% on travel, shipping, internet, cable, phone, advertising on search engines or social media sites. (80,000 point sign up bonus)

Chase Southwest - 2% on Southwest purchases. Great for domestic flights (40,000 mile sign up bonus)

Chase United - 2% on United purchases, priority boarding, first checked bag is free, 2 one time use United Club passes (40,000 mile sign up bonus)

Chase Hyatt - 3% on Hyatt purchases, 2% on restaurants, car rental, airline purchases annual free hotel night (40,000 point sign up bonus)
