Spoonflower Design Challenge Entry - Refined Bohemian Wallpaper Challenge

Spoonflower design challenges are so interesting because often what you end up designing is totally different from what you initially envisioned.
While I did find that to be the case with the Refined Bohemian Wallpaper challenge, I really enjoyed some of the surface patterns I designed in the process. Boho Floral Stripes on Sherwin Williams High StrungThis fun floral half drop pattern color matches to Sherwin William's paint colors Snowbound and High Strung.

This week's Spoonflower design challenge was to create non-directional wallpaper - a wallpaper design without a clear up or down. In other words one that can be installed in any direction and still make sense - vertical, horizontal, diagonal, ceiling wallpaper... you get the idea!

I started with a color palette my husband described as "Caribbean Blues". After creating a painting on my iPad, I began to adapt it into a multi-directional design. I'm always amazed at how different the final surface pattern design looks compared to the original motif. In this case I find it marries quite a few elements and styles - It's a tiled pattern, featuring an abstract sun on the horizon and mountain landscape in a painted style which would not be complete with out a few paint splatters of a golden essence. This tiled surface pattern design would look great on pillows, don't you think?
Sized down it would make a very cool necktie or headband.

This week's Spoonflower design challenge was to find inspiration in the buttercup flower family. Apparently this includes the cheery little yellow flowers we think of initially as well as clematis, columbine, and any flower in the ranunculaceae flower family!

I went with a painted style trio of cheery butter cup flowers on a toned down yellow background. The repeat is a diamond repeat reminiscent of argyle and would look cute on throw pillows, duvets, and window treatments. IRL you'll be able to appreciate the detailed brush strokes and linen texture of this floral surface pattern design. Feel free to Reach out if you need a resize!

What is Spoonflower?

The Green Forest Computer desk is one piece and the legs fold and unfold by sliding along a bar diagonally. It is recommended to open and close by lying on it's side, but as you get used to the movement you may not need to do that

The Noblewell Computer desk is two pieces, but requires no tools and is simple to assembly. Simply swing out the legs like a gate, and then set the desktop on top, using the little clips to attach the desk top to the frame!
Side By Side
Here are some side by side comparisons.
Space: As you can see the Green Forest Desk is not as long, but it is deeper. It also takes up more floor space because of the way the legs are at an angle, which is something to consider.
Height: The Noblewell desk is a bit taller. The green forest desk is higher over all due to the secondary shelf, but the main desk portion of the Noblewell desk is higher. This may be better suited for a true computer chair, a taller person, or anyone who wants to use an under the desk elliptical. Side note: The elliptical fits under both desks, but is much easier to use under the Noblewell computer desk.
Material: Both desks have metal legs/frame and are some type of MDF wood/particle board. The Green Forest desk has a finish much like the popular Ikea Linnmon table top. The Noblewell computer desk has a printed wood finish, almost like contact paper? I'm not sure how else to describe it. I think the finish of the Green Forest Desk seems more high quality, but a draw back is that it shows smudges really easily as you can see from the picture below.

Other Considerations:
It's important to consider how you plan to use this desk.
Below you can find some other foldable desks to compare. They are all around $100 or less and have different features that may suit your needs.
- Is it for letter writing or zoom meetings?
- Is it for crafting where you need a longer surface area?
- Is it for photography where a sheen is not desirable?
- Do you plan to collapse it after each use or only occasionally?
- Who is using it? A child or a tall adult? Consider the height of the desk top and what type of chair you have in line with that.
- Definitely take into consideration how far the legs stick out and if that will be an obstacle in your space.
- Do you need an upper shelf for monitors, ring lights, phone stands, etc or is a one-level desk top surface enough?
